The life of Buddha is divided into three parts:
1) The first part is his earthly life as Siddhartha Gautama.
2) The second part consists of various stages in his life after enlightenment such as when he was teaching his disciples and preparing them for his departure from the world. This phase is known as “Buddha’s passing away” and it takes place in all traditions of Buddhism. In Mahayana Buddhism, this phase has been further developed into many other events such as Buddha’s paranirvana (his last day on earth), descent into nirvana (his ascension to heaven), and revelation of the Buddha land (the Pure Land), etc. These events are depicted in many Buddhist artworks, especially those depicting Buddha’s passing away.
3) The third part concerns his continued existence after death; this is known as Buddhahood or Nirvana (the state beyond suffering).
